Successful Fabrication of 2D Photonic Crystals A photonic crystal is a periodical structure composed of different refractive-index materials and its use is expected to lead to the development of future ultra-small-sized optical integrated cirsuits. Using SOI (Silicon On Insulator) structures, we have demonstrated 2D photonic crystal and line-defect structures with good transmission characteristics for the first time.
