Spot-Size Converters for Photonic Crystal Waveguides Novel spot-size converters that enable efficient coupling between photonic crystal waveguides and single-mode fibers have been realized. The coupling loss had been thought to be one of major problems for photonic-crystal-based integrated circuit application, and this device has successfully reduced the coupling loss from 30dB to 3-4dB.
