Vispatch Tutorial (using Java 1.02) > TOC > Overview > Java Requirements

Java Requirements

There are two versions of the Vispatch applet. One uses Java version 1.18 and has more features, but is large and may not work with some Web browsers. The other uses Java version 1.02 and lacks some features, but it should work well with most Web browsers. You can see which version of the tutorial you are reading by looking in the link upperleft hand corner of the web page. You can easily switch between the two verisons by clicking on that link, which will return you to this page.

The advantage of the Java 1.18 version is that it provides drawing-editor-like features for editing Vispatch programs. The Java 1.18 applet should work on most browsers. The Java 1.18 applet so far has been tested on Windows 95 versions of Netscape 4.61 and Explorer 4.72. The code will take several minutes to load at first, but should run quickly after the code is in a browser's cache.

If it does not work or you have a slow internet connection, you should use the Java 1.02 version of the tutorial. It does not have the editing features, however most of the tutorial does not require them. The few pages that do are marked with the text (Note: the Java 1.02 applet below does not have the editing features required for this demonstration.)

If you have a slow internet connection or would like to work offline, you can download the entire tutorial your local hard disk. You can download it here as a zip archive: vptutorial.zip.
