Imaging of Zero-dimensional States in a Semiconductor Nanostructure

Utilization of the quantum mechanical wave phenomena in nanostructures is important for developing quantum devices and quantum computers. We have imaged the local density of states (LDOS) of zero-dimensionally confined electron waves by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at low temperatures. It is found that the LDOS distribution of a semiconductor nanostructure coincides with the probability distribution of electrons in a zero-dimensional structure (a quantum dot).
